CARE CHAMPION:

Meet Vanessa Merino, Executive Director of Care Operations

In this feature of our Care Champions, we shine a light on the incredible individuals who make our team so special. Today, we have the pleasure of introducing Vanessa Merino, our Executive of Care Operations, whose passion and dedication have inspired us all. Join us as we learn more about Vanessa and her valuable contributions to our organization.

As Executive Director of Care Operations, Vanessa leads a dedicated team of field staff who provide essential service and advocacy to our clients. Her day-to-day involves communicating with individuals interested in accessing GSF CARE services, ensuring that their needs are understood and addressed effectively.

Let’s dive into some fun questions to get to know her beyond her professional duties:

If you could possess one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?

If I could possess a superpower, I would want to be able to read minds. So much is based on perception. I would use this to help people better understand each other.

What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?

Hang out with my family, attend a workout class, or watch reality TV.

What’s your favorite hobby or pastime outside of work?

I am not a hobby person; I am more of an experience person. I love experiencing new things and making memories from those things.

When I am not seeking new adventures, my passion is making a difference in my community especially as it relates to our schools and children. For years I was a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Now I tutor kids at my daughter’s elementary school. In addition to that, I participate in the school PTA, the District English Learner Advisory Committee, and the School Site Council.

If you could switch jobs with anyone else on the team for a day, who would it be and why?

If I could switch jobs with anyone it would be the Colorado Regional Director, Jon. I love what he has done in Colorado and how much he has grown in CO. I would love to be in the trenches of the Medical Proxy program, but I would also love more time in Colorado to explore. I have not had the opportunity to stay past a business visit and always wish I could see more.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Besides advocating for the individuals, we serve; I find great fulfillment in watching the growth and development of my team members. Contributing to their professional advancement brings me immense satisfaction. Whether they continue their journey within our organization or elsewhere, it’s rewarding to see how far they can go.

My role involves implementing strategic plans assigned by the Executive Leadership Team, overseeing budgeting, HR, business development, and clinical programs for affiliates. Additionally, it entails serving as a compliance liaison, supporting the COO and collaborating with the VP Leadership Team. The role also involves acting as the primary liaison for operations, employee/client relations, and regulatory compliance for person-centered services, including financial appointments.

Share a memorable experience or achievement during your time with a client or family member we serve:

Choosing just one experience is difficult because we serve so many unique individuals and share many significant moments. I’ve had the privilege of being present during life’s most profound transitions, celebrating triumphs, and cherishing even the smallest gestures of care, like helping someone find the perfect outfit.

One particularly touching moment involved a remarkable mother, a true superhero in every sense. She had devoted herself to the welfare of 27 special needs individuals. She has chosen GSF to replace her as Conservator for her 6 conserved sons. After years of working together and working on the placement for her son, she began planning for a special trip she desperately needed. Sacrificing and meticulously working to make this happen. However, just as she was about to leave on this well-deserved journey, plans for her son’s care fell apart. Witnessing her devastation, I knew I had to act swiftly. With support from my supervisors, I arranged for nursing care for her son and adjusted my schedule to ensure his well-being while she was away. Seeing her finally able to take that vacation, knowing the sacrifices she made, was truly heartwarming.

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Vanessa as much as we have. Together, we have the potential to achieve great things and make a lasting impact. Here’s to many more opportunities to shine a light on the amazing individuals who make our team extraordinary!
