March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month:
Advocating for Inclusion & Community Support

Every March, we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time dedicated to promoting inclusion, advocating for equal opportunities, and celebrating the incredible contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities. At The Good Shepherd Fund, we believe in fostering a supportive community where individuals with disabilities can thrive with dignity, security, and independence.

Understanding Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions that impact physical, learning, language, or behavioral abilities. According to the CDC, approximately one in six children in the U.S. is diagnosed with a developmental disability, which can include autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities.

Despite the challenges individuals with developmental disabilities may face, they contribute immensely to their families, workplaces, and communities when provided with the right support and resources.

The Importance of Advocacy and Inclusion

Advocacy plays a crucial role in ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and social participation. Inclusion is not just about providing accommodations—it’s about creating spaces where individuals with disabilities are valued, respected, and given opportunities to lead fulfilling lives.

As a community, we can foster inclusion by:

Supporting legislation that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities.

Encouraging businesses to adopt inclusive hiring practices.

Engaging in conversations that challenge stereotypes and misconceptions.

Providing resources and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in community activities.

How The Good Shepherd Fund Supports Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

At The Good Shepherd Fund, we are committed to safeguarding the financial well-being and personal care needs of individuals with disabilities. Our Special Needs Trusts (SNTs) and Long-Term Care Management Services ensure that individuals receive the support they need to maintain their quality of life while preserving their eligibility for vital government benefits.

Special Needs Trusts (SNTs)

A Special Needs Trust provides financial security without jeopardizing eligibility for programs such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This type of trust allows families to set aside funds for their loved ones while ensuring that their essential needs are met.

Our team at The Good Shepherd Fund helps families navigate the complexities of setting up and managing these trusts, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can live with dignity and financial stability.

Long-Term Care Management Services

Beyond financial security, individuals with developmental disabilities often require ongoing care and support.

Our Care Management Services include:

Wellness checks and advocacy to ensure proper healthcare and benefits access.

Oversight of caregivers and service providers to maintain a high quality of care.

Assistance with budgeting and bill payment to ensure financial stability.

Personalized support plans that adapt to the unique needs of each individual.

How You Can Make a Difference

Community involvement is essential in fostering a more inclusive and supportive society. Here are some ways you can contribute during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month:
